Salva Kiir Mayardit was born in Akon, Bahr El Ghazal province, Sudan (now South Sudan) in 1951. He is a Dinka politician who has been the President of South Sudan since its independence in 2011.
Kiir
joined the rebel Sudan People's Liberation Movement (SPLM/A) during the Second
Sudanese Civil War (1983-2005). He quickly rose through the ranks and became
one of the SPLM/A's top commanders.
In
2005, the SPLM/A signed a comprehensive peace agreement with the Sudanese
government, which led to the formation of a power-sharing government and the
independence of South Sudan in 2011. Kiir served as First Vice President of
South Sudan from 2005 to 2011.
In
2010, Kiir was elected President of South Sudan. He was re-elected in 2015, but
his presidency has been marred by violence and instability. In 2013, a civil
war broke out between Kiir's government and rebel forces led by former Vice
President Riek Machar. The civil war ended in 2018 with the signing of a peace
agreement, but the country remains fragile and divided.
Despite
the challenges he faces, Kiir remains a popular figure among many South
Sudanese people. He is seen as a strong leader who can unite the country and
